Barbecue under a tree in Bali
When me and my wife went to Bali a few years ago, there was one food spot that I really wanted to try after seeing one of Mike Chen’s Bali episodes under his YouTube channel, Strictly Dumpling. It was this casual restaurant where the pork barbeque smoke envelopes the entire vicinity and entices barbeque lovers of all races and nations with its alluring scent.
The place that serves one of the juiciest and most flavorful satays that I’ve ever tried: their sate babi.
So, we used the waze app and tried locating it as soon as we arrived in Bali— that’s how excited we are! To our surprise, it was just a few steps away from our Airbnb, so we decided to go there for dinner.
The place is located at Jl. Dewi Sri IV Jl. Campuhan I - Dewi Sri No.I, Legian, Kuta, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361
Sate Babi Pawa Pohon, or “Pork Satay under a tree” as it is directly translated, is located in the Legian/Kuta area where we were staying at that time. It has become a bit of a tourist attraction over the years, but it still remains pretty affordable. They offer a variety of food and different types of satay, but our eyes were locked on the sate babi.
This porky goodness in a barbeque skewer is marinated with lots of different ingredients and local spices. The flavor does not dance around as it definitely packs quite a punch just after the first bite. It’ll overwhelm you with flavor combinations of sweet, spicy, savory, salty, peanutty, and a little bit of bitterness from the char. It’s best with lontong or Indonesian compressed rice cake to tame it’s powerful flavor, and sambal if you want to up the ante and take the eating experience to a whole new level.
the barbecue masters doing their thing.
Make no mistake, you might want to stop because it’s too spicy for you, but you can’t. It’s just that good! We ended up burning our tongues after fifteen skewers, but it was worth it. It was, for sure, one of the best food experiences we had in Bali.
