What do we really want in a burger?

When it comes to the sophisticated yet simple burger, what are the things you look for that make a burger extra special? Is it the cooking method of the patty? The quality of the ingredients? some secret sauce that gives you an intense flavor bomb?

In this article, I would try to make a guide of sorts for you to find out what burger works for you. We all have our own picks, and I'm not gonna judge anyone with what they look for in a burger. If you ask the right questions, I'm sure you'll be able to know what's for you.

Here are the important elements of a good burger

What kind of bun are you looking for? How about the texture? Do you want a soft yet toasty sesame exterior? a crisp grilled brioche bun? or maybe even a Japanese milk bun to make things a little bit sweet. What butter do you use to glisten and elevate the bun? Truly important questions.

You would want your bun to be able to withstand the essential ingredients in between and make sure that they could hold the beautiful mess for as long as they can. This is the important piece that holds it all together.

Patty

Yes. We are getting right into the thick of things. This is the star of the show. The ingredients would play an integral part. For the beef patties, the delicate balance of flavor from the beef and fat is key. how you balance it out with different cuts of beef and fat could make or break the final output. There are various combinations you could choose, whether it's different cuts of beef with added bacon for fat, veal, or vegan options. Find what works for you.

Lettuce, Tomatoes, Cheese, and/or other ingredients

Now, this makes the burger a heightened experience. The star player can only be as good if it has the proper role players and supporting staff. The subtle differences in texture and flavor elevate your burger experience. The lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles are the ones that have always been tried and tested along with a standard house dressing.

There have also been people who have been pushing the limits to what a burger can be. Putting caviar, lobster tails, tons of bacon, and other over-the-top ingredients seem to have been normal in this day and age because of the #foodporn era. It may or may not work, but I suggest sticking to 3 or 4 key ingredients are best to not overwhelm the patty flavor.

My preference? a quarter-pound grass-fed Angus beef that is grilled to a beautiful medium-rare, melted-American cheese, caramelized onions, with jalapenos for that spicy zing, along with a bed of lettuce and a slice of tomato. Simple ketchup and Japanese mayo dressing and a brioche bun to put it all together.

I guess building a burger would take time, but you have to go for it and explore even further. It's a meal or a snack that never fails.
